What a Bulgarian bank checks before it opens the account

Two accounts, two checks

The capital deposit account asks little of the founders: the bank identifies them and reads the founding documents. The current account is a second application. For it the bank runs its know your customer (KYC) check, which the EU rules against money laundering require of every bank in the Union.

What the bank asks about

  • Who owns and directs the company, with each person's passport and proof of address
  • What the business sells, to whom, and the turnover it expects
  • Where each owner's money comes from
  • That the business is real: first contracts, invoices or a working website

A foreign owner gets a closer look

A company with a foreign owner or director gets a closer look, which means more documents and a longer review. We collect the documents, check them against the bank's list and send one complete application, so the bank has few questions left. The owner named to the bank is the person declared as beneficial owner (UBO) in the Trade Register.

How we open a business bank account in Bulgaria

  1. during registration

    Capital deposit account

We open it at a Bulgarian bank while we draft the founding documents. You transfer the share capital from your own bank, at least 70% of it when the capital is above €1.

  2. about a day

    Bank certificate

The bank confirms that the capital is paid in, and we file its certificate with the Trade Register.

  3. 5 to 10 working days

    Company registered

The Trade Register enters the company and gives it a UIC, the 9-digit code that every bank form asks for. The filing is set out in the guide on how to register a company in Bulgaria.

  4. after registration

    Current account application

You upload the documents of the owners and of the business in your account. We check them, fill in the bank's forms and book the meeting. The director signs at the bank or gives a notarised power of attorney.

  5. 1 week to 2 months

    Account opened

The bank checks the owners and the business and opens the account. You receive the IBAN, the cards and the online banking, and the share capital is free to use.

An account in euros: SEPA, instant payments and the deposit guarantee

Bulgaria joined the euro area on that day. A Bulgarian company holds its balance and pays in euros, and a payment between two euro accounts needs no exchange. The guide to Bulgaria's euro adoption covers what changed for companies.

After the account opens: payments, taxes and the books

IBANPayments by IBAN, a VAT number for EU invoices

Clients pay to the current account's IBAN, and the company pays salaries, suppliers and the taxes due to the National Revenue Agency from it by transfer. A company that will invoice businesses in other EU countries needs a VAT number before its first invoice. We file VAT registration in Bulgaria as soon as the company has its UIC.

€150Each movement is a document in the books

Each movement on the account is also a document in the books. The tariff of accounting in Bulgaria counts one bank transaction as one document, so a company with few payments stays in the first band: €150 a month for up to 30 documents. You upload the monthly statement in your account, and your accountant matches it to the invoices.

What we do for your corporate bank account in Bulgaria

We open it during registration, with the bank's fee inside the €280, and send the certificate to the Trade Register.

Questions about a business bank account in Bulgaria

Can a UK citizen open a bank account in Bulgaria?

For a company, yes. Foreigners of any citizenship can own and direct a Bulgarian company, and the account is opened in the company's name. The bank asks each owner for a passport, proof of address and the source of funds.

Which Bulgarian bank is best for foreigners?

The one whose terms match the company's payments. UniCredit Bulbank, DSK Bank and ProCredit Bank take a company's request online, and Fibank prices its business packages from €9.46 a month. We name the bank to apply to once we know your business.

What do I need to open a bank account in Bulgaria?

For a company: its entry in the Trade Register, the passports of the owners and the director, proof of address, the source of funds and a description of the business. The director signs the application and gives a specimen signature.

Which bank allows foreigners to open an account?

Bulgarian law sets no nationality or residence rule for the owners and directors of a company. Banks open accounts for foreign-owned companies once they have checked the owners and the business. We apply to one of the eight banks we work with.

Do I have to travel to Bulgaria to open the account?

The capital deposit account needs no trip, and for the current account a notarised power of attorney replaces the director's one visit to the bank.

How long does it take to open a company bank account in Bulgaria?

About a day for the capital deposit account and 1 week to 2 months for the current account.

Is the capital deposit account the same as the current account?

No. The current account is a new application after the company is registered, at the same bank or at another one, and we prepare it.

Can a Bulgarian company use a payment account instead of a bank?

For daily payments, yes: an electronic money institution (EMI) licensed in the EU gives the company an EU IBAN. The share capital goes through a Bulgarian bank, which issues the certificate for the Trade Register.
