Corporate tax and dividend tax in Bulgaria: 10% and 5%
10%A flat tax on the year's profit
A Bulgarian company pays a flat 10% corporate tax on the taxable profit of the calendar year. When profit is paid out to an owner who is an individual, the company withholds a 5% dividend tax. A dividend that goes to a parent company resident in the EU or the EEA carries none.
30 JuneThe return and the tax
We file the corporate tax return between 1 March and 30 June of the following year, and the tax is due by 30 June. The dividend tax goes to the National Revenue Agency by the end of the month after the quarter in which the owners voted the payout.
€153,387.56When advance tax starts
Advance corporate tax does not apply in the year a company is registered or in the one after. Later, advances start once net sales two years earlier passed €153,387.56. We file the declaration of advance tax between 1 March and 15 April.
| On a profit of €60,000 | Amount |
|---|---|
| Corporate tax at 10% | €6,000 |
| Profit after tax | €54,000 |
| Dividend tax at 5% of €54,000 | €2,700 |
| Paid to the owner | €51,300 |
| Tax in Bulgaria, 14.5% of the profit | €8,700 |
The tax identification number of a Bulgarian company is its UIC, the 9-digit code it receives from the Trade Register. The National Revenue Agency registers a new company from the register's data, with no application from you.

Books in euros: standards, audit and SAF-T
1.95583Books in euros since 1 January 2026
The euro has been Bulgaria's currency since 1 January 2026. On that day the accountant restated each balance at the fixed rate of 1.95583 leva for one euro, and invoices, ledgers, returns and tax payments have been in euros since. The statements for 2026 are the first full year in the new currency.
4 rulesWhat the law asks of the books
Two are on how they are kept and signed:
- The books are double-entry and kept in Bulgarian, under the National Accounting Standards. Your accountant explains every figure in English.
- Two signatures go on the yearly statements: the director's and that of the preparer, who is an accounting firm or an economist with 2 to 8 years of practice, the years set by the level of the degree.
50 yearsPayroll records kept, and ledgers for 10 years
Two more rules of the law cover the audit and the archive:
- An audit is compulsory above two of three limits at 31 December: €2,045,168 of assets, €4,090,335 of net sales, 50 employees.
- Payroll records are kept for 50 years, ledgers and statements for 10.
2030SAF-T, the monthly ledger file
SAF-T is a monthly electronic file of the ledgers for the tax office. It started with the largest companies on 1 January 2026 and widens each year. A micro-enterprise with a VAT number joins last, on 1 January 2030, and we file it with the monthly returns when your company's turn comes. The date for each size of company: accounting requirements in Bulgaria.

Questions about accounting services in Bulgaria
How much does an accountant cost in Bulgaria?
From €150 a month for a company with up to 30 documents a month, and €190 for 31 to 60. A VAT number adds €30, and each employee above two adds €8, all before VAT. A VAT-registered shop with 50 documents a month and four employees pays €190 + €30 + €16 = €236.
Is the corporate tax return part of the monthly price?
Yes. The tariff from €150 a month covers the yearly corporate tax return and the annual accounts. The guide to corporate tax in Bulgaria shows how the 10% is worked out.
Can I keep the books of my Bulgarian company myself?
With the preparer's qualification, yes: an economics education and 2 to 8 years of practice, the years set by the level of the degree.
Does a Bulgarian company need an audit?
Not until it passes two of three limits at the end of the year: €2,045,168 of assets, €4,090,335 of net sales, 50 employees. Every company still publishes its yearly statements in the Trade Register by 30 September.
In which currency does a Bulgarian company keep its books?
In euros. The lev gave way to the euro on 1 January 2026, so the books, the invoices and the returns are in euros.
What does a company with no activity file?
One declaration of no activity, sent to the Trade Register by 30 June of the following year in place of the statements and the tax return. We file it for €120.
Can I work with the accountant in English?
Yes. One accountant works with you in English all year and replies within two working hours. The books themselves are kept in Bulgarian, under the National Accounting Standards.
When does a Bulgarian company register for VAT?
Once its turnover passes €51,130 in a calendar year, or earlier by choice. Registration costs €80 and is free with accounting.
