Accounting requirements in Singapore: records, standards and the financial year end
5 yearsRecords kept after each financial year
Section 199 of the Companies Act asks each company for accounting records that explain its transactions and let true and fair financial statements be prepared. The company keeps them for 5 years after the financial year they belong to, and a breach carries a fine of up to S$10,000.
FRSThe accounting standards
The statements follow the standards of the Accounting Standards Committee: the Financial Reporting Standards, FRS, which are based on IFRS, or the SFRS for Small Entities. We prepare the yearly statements under them as XBRL data, and the filing agent files them with the annual return.
18 monthsLongest financial year without ACRA's approval
You choose the year end, and 31 March, 30 June, 30 September and 31 December are the common dates. A financial year runs 12 months or 52 weeks. A year longer than 18 months, or a second change of the date within 5 years, needs ACRA's approval. IRAS taxes each financial year in the next calendar year, the year of assessment.
A first financial year longer than 12 months is split between two years of assessment.

A private company that passes two of the three for two financial years running needs no auditor.
S$10m Revenue of the year
Revenue up to S$10 million in the financial statements. A company in its first two years is tested on the year in hand.
S$10m Total assets
Assets up to S$10 million at the year end. A company in a group passes when the whole group, companies abroad included, passes as well.
50 Employees
50 full-time employees or fewer at the year end. A company above the tests appoints an auditor, arranged as part of our service, and we prepare the audit file.
Corporate tax filing in Singapore: ECI, Form C-S and GST returns
3 monthsThe estimate of taxable profit, ECI
A company reports to IRAS twice for each financial year. The estimated chargeable income, ECI, is an estimate of taxable profit due within 3 months of the year end. A company with revenue up to S$5 million and a nil estimate skips it.
30 NovemberInstalments and the return
An ECI filed in the first month after the year end splits the tax into 10 monthly instalments by GIRO, in the second month into 8 and in the third into 6. The return itself is due by 30 November of the following year, on one of three forms.
1 monthThe assessment and the payment
IRAS applies the exemptions itself and issues a notice of assessment, and the tax is due 1 month later. We prepare the estimate, the tax computation and the return, and you approve the figures in your account. Rates and exemptions: company formation in Singapore.
S$1 millionTurnover that makes GST registration compulsory
Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes S$1 million, exports included. A registered company charges 9% and files form F5 for each quarter, also for a quarter with no sales. A company that registers by choice stays registered for 2 years. One that applied on or after 1 April 2026 also sends its invoice data to IRAS through the InvoiceNow network.

Annual general meeting, annual return and XBRL filing with ACRA
The shareholders receive the financial statements at a meeting. A private company holds none when it sends them to every shareholder within 5 months of the year end, or when all resolve to dispense with it.
The return confirms the officers, the shareholders and the registered office and carries the financial statements. The company's registered filing agent, arranged as part of our service, files it in Bizfile.
ACRA takes the statements as XBRL data. A company with revenue and assets up to S$500,000 each files the simplified template, about 120 data elements, with a PDF of the signed statements. A larger one files full XBRL, about 210 elements.
A company with up to 20 shareholders, all individuals, files no statements while it is solvent: its directors declare the solvency in the annual return.
Payroll in Singapore: CPF rates in 2026 and the Skills Development Levy
S$8,000Who draws CPF and on which wages
An employer pays into the Central Provident Fund, CPF, for each employee who is a citizen or a permanent resident and earns above S$50 a month. Staff on a work pass draw no CPF. The rates in the table apply from 1 January 2026 to monthly wages above S$750, on ordinary wages up to S$8,000.
S$1,020A salary of S$6,000 at age 40
A salary of S$6,000 for an employee aged 40 costs the employer S$1,020 of CPF, and S$1,200 comes out of the pay. From 1 January 2027 the totals rise to 35.5% for ages above 55 to 60 and to 26% for above 60 to 65.
0.25%Of monthly wages, for the skills levy
The Skills Development Levy is 0.25% of monthly wages for each employee, foreign staff included, from S$2 to S$11.25 a person. CPF and the levy are due at the month's end, with grace to the 14th.
IR8APayslips and the yearly form
Each employee receives an itemised payslip within 3 working days of the salary. By 1 March we prepare each employee's income for the year, form IR8A, which an employer of 5 or more staff sends to IRAS electronically.
| Employee's age | Employer | Employee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 and below | 17% | 20% | 37% |
| Above 55 to 60 | 16% | 18% | 34% |
| Above 60 to 65 | 12.5% | 12.5% | 25% |
| Above 65 to 70 | 9% | 7.5% | 16.5% |
| Above 70 | 7.5% | 5% | 12.5% |

Questions about accounting services in Singapore
How much do accounting services cost in Singapore?
Our fee is fixed in your quote. Four things set it: the documents a month, GST registration, the number of employees and whether the accounts are audited.
How do I see the books of my Singapore company?
In your account: each month's income, costs and missing documents, the returns that wait for your approval and the dates ahead. You write to your accountant there, as with all our outsourced accounting services.
Does a dormant Singapore company still file returns?
Yes. It files the annual return with ACRA each year while it is live. For IRAS it files the short form for dormant companies by 30 November, unless IRAS has waived the return. It needs no audit.
Can the accounting records of a Singapore company be kept abroad?
Yes. Section 199 of the Companies Act allows records outside Singapore when statements and returns that let the accounts be prepared are kept in Singapore as well.
Is CPF paid for foreign employees?
No, and the Skills Development Levy is due for each of them. Fees paid to a director who lives abroad carry 24% withholding tax, due by the 15th of the second month after payment.
When does a new Singapore company file its first tax return?
The first ECI is due 3 months after the first financial year end. Take a company formed in July 2025 that trades at once and closes its first accounts on 31 December 2025. It files the ECI by 31 March 2026 and Form C-S by 30 November 2026.
When is GST registration required in Singapore?
When taxable turnover passed S$1 million in a calendar year, the company applies by 30 January and is registered on 1 March. When it expects to pass S$1 million in the coming 12 months, it applies within 30 days.
