Can Americans open a bank account in Cyprus? FATCA and documents

Yes, Americans can open a bank account in Cyprus, through a Cyprus company. The bank collects a FATCA self-certification with the owner's US tax number on top of the usual file. The account opens in 4 to 12 weeks after the company is registered, and we prepare the file and the forms.

In short

  • No rule bars an American owner. The Central Bank directive tells a bank to weigh each customer on the file.
  • The addition is FATCA: a signed self-certification with the US tax number, for the owner and for the company.
  • The company comes first, then the account: 8 to 12 working days to register, then 4 to 12 weeks at the bank.

Can Americans open a bank account in Cyprus? What changes for a US-owned company

A US citizen who owns a Cyprus company can bank it in Cyprus. The account holder is the company, and the American is its beneficial owner and may be a director. The Central Bank of Cyprus directive on money laundering tells a bank not to turn away whole categories of customers. The bank weighs each relationship on its own file, records the reason for a refusal and shows it to the supervisor on request.

Nationality is no ground for a refusal, and the file is the one every foreign owner sends. The guide to opening a business bank account in Cyprus lists the banks, the documents and the weeks they take. A US owner meets three additions: a FATCA self-certification, documents that come from a US state with an apostille, and a fixed order in which the company and the account open.

We prepare the application and every form. The page on a Cyprus bank account for your company shows the service and its price.

FATCA at a Cyprus bank: the self-certification a US owner signs

A Cyprus bank asks a US owner to sign a FATCA self-certification before it opens the account. FATCA is the US law of 2010 that makes banks outside the US identify US citizens among their customers and report their accounts. Cyprus and the US signed an agreement to apply it on 2 December 2014, and the FATCA Decree 281/2015 put it into force in Cyprus. Every Cyprus financial institution identifies the accounts of US citizens and entities and reports them to the Tax Department.

The bank collects a self-certification when the account opens. Bank of Cyprus states that without the customer's tax residence and tax identification number it is not authorised to open a new account.

Who signsWhat the form asksPaper the bank may use
You, as the owner who controls the companyName, residence address, date of birth, countries of tax residence, US citizenship and your US tax identification numberThe bank's form, or IRS Form W-9, the request for a taxpayer identification number
The company, through a directorWhere it is tax resident, and its status as a financial institution, an active non-financial entity or a passive oneThe bank's form, or IRS Form W-8BEN-E, the certificate of status of an entity
Each other beneficial ownerThe same questions as yoursThe bank's form for each person

The Tax Department prescribes no format. Its Guidance Notes say the account holder signs and dates the form, or confirms it online. Bank of Cyprus says Forms W-8 and W-9 may capture the FATCA data. The bank names its own paper, and we complete it with you.

FATCA looks at citizenship and at residence. An American who lives in Cyprus lists Cyprus as the tax residence and still shows as a US person, so the form asks for both. The guide for Americans and Cyprus tax residency covers the residence rules.

For a company the test is the person who controls it. A passive non-financial entity with a US controlling person is a reportable account, and the bank takes that person's status only from a self-certification. A bank may treat an operating company as active from what it already holds, so your business description counts twice.

The owner pack: identity, address and source of wealth for a US owner

The directive sets what a bank may accept from any owner outside the EU. The banks we apply to ask for the proof of address and the bank reference letter dated within 3 months, which is stricter than the directive.

ItemWhat the directive acceptsWhat a US owner can send
AddressA recent utility bill (up to 6 months old), a home insurance document, municipal tax bill, income tax document, government document or bank statementA bank statement, a property tax bill or a tax document that shows the home address
Source of wealthVAT and income tax returns, audited accounts, payslips, public documents or references to independent mediaTax returns, the contract and closing statement of a business sale, pay statements
Public officePositions held in the last 12 months, by the customer or a close relativeAn answer in the bank's questionnaire, for every owner and director

The bank reads the source of wealth most closely. Write it as a short account of the business or the job that produced the capital, and attach the returns that show it. The name, address and ownership must agree in the FATCA form, the passport and this file.

A US company that owns the Cyprus company sends the papers a Cyprus company would send, and the bank establishes the people behind it before the relationship starts. The structure is in the guide to a US company with a Cyprus holding.

Documents from the US: certified copies, apostilles and substitutes

The directive lets a bank take an original, or a copy certified by its own official, by a third party or by a government department. An original with an apostille serves too. A document in English needs no translation.

An apostille is the stamp that makes a public document valid abroad under the Hague Convention. Cyprus has been a party since 30 April 1973 and the US since 15 October 1981. Each US state has its own office, procedure and fees, and federal documents go to the State Department. Delaware's Division of Corporations, for one, does not apostille photocopies or documents notarised remotely or electronically, so check your state's rule before you sign.

You sign the bank's forms remotely, and a notary or our lawyer certifies the copies of the passport and the proof of address. A bank that takes a customer from an introducer must meet the beneficial owner before the first transaction, and the directive allows that meeting online when it is recorded.

Document a US owner may lackWhat the bank takes instead
A utility bill in your own nameA recent bank statement, tax bill or tax document
A shareholder certificate for a US company, where its state registry issues noneOther valid sources the bank checks, and a chart of the ownership signed by the beneficial owner
Payslips, for an owner who sold a businessTax returns, audited accounts or public documents on the sale

Company formation with a bank account: the order of the steps and the timing

The company comes first. The Registrar asks for no bank document at the registration. A bank asks for the certificate of incorporation, so none opens an account for a company that does not yet exist. What runs together is the preparation, since we gather the owner pack and draft the bank questionnaire while the Registrar processes the company.

  1. You send the owner pack and the details for the FATCA form. We register the company, expected in 8 to 12 working days from complete documents.
  2. The certificate of incorporation arrives. You apply, with our help, for a Wise or Revolut account that day, and it opens in 1 to 5 working days.
  3. We order the Registrar's certificates for the bank, which take 2 to 3 weeks.
  4. You sign the bank's forms and the self-certifications, and we file the application.
  5. The bank reviews it, asks its questions and opens the account in 4 to 12 weeks.

Complete documents on Monday 2 November 2026 put the registration between 12 and 18 November. The payment account is expected between 13 and 25 November and the certificates for the bank between 26 November and 9 December. The bank account follows between 24 December 2026 and 3 March 2027. In our files Bank of Cyprus takes 10 to 12 weeks for a new company whose owners live outside the EU, so an American owner plans for the long end there.

Start the US papers on the first day, because the state issues the apostille. The steps up to the certificate are in the guide to how to register a company in Cyprus, and forming a Cyprus company from abroad covers the owner who lives outside Cyprus. To start both, see company formation in Cyprus.

Why a Cyprus bank refuses an account for a US-owned company

A bank account is never guaranteed, and the law gives the reason. Section 62(4) of the money laundering law says that a bank which cannot complete its customer due diligence shall not establish a business relationship or carry out a transaction through the account. Nobody can promise an account before the bank has read the file, and we build it to complete every check.

The published rules point to six causes, and a US owner can meet each of them.

  • No self-certification. Bank of Cyprus cannot open the account without it, and the Guidance Notes tell a bank to close or freeze an account whose holder has not supplied one within 90 days.
  • A shell company. The directive defines it as a company with no physical presence, or with no business activity and no evidence of any.
  • No proof of trade. The bank collects financial statements, tax returns, a website or online shop, customers, partners and contracts. A company that sells products, writes content or consults remotely can pass when the bank verifies the activity.
  • A chain it cannot read. The bank must know the natural persons behind every parent company.
  • A source of wealth without papers. The directive names returns, audited accounts and payslips.
  • An activity that needs a licence. A crypto-asset service provider not supervised under the EU's MiCA regulation faces enhanced checks, and so do trust accounts.

The remedies are in the guide to a Cyprus company bank account.

Bank or payment account for a US-owned company: where to check the licence

You check a bank in the Central Bank of Cyprus register of credit institutions, which divides them into local banks and EU and non-EU subsidiaries and branches. You check a payment provider in one of four lists: payment institutions and electronic money institutions that the Central Bank authorised, and EU ones that are active in Cyprus.

Bank of Cyprus says FATCA and CRS apply to every bank and financial institution in Cyprus, so the FATCA details go into every application. The guide to a business bank account in Cyprus compares speed, deposit protection and the investment of a company of foreign interests.

What we do not advise: your own US reporting

Our advice covers the Cyprus side, which means the company, the bank application and the Cyprus forms. Your US tax, your US reporting and the way the US classifies a Cyprus company are for your own US adviser, including whether and how you report a Cyprus account. The IRS has its own pages on the report of foreign bank and financial accounts (FBAR) and on Form 8938, the statement of specified foreign financial assets. They are in the sources, and we do not interpret them.

With your adviser's view of the structure, we prepare the application for the Cyprus bank, as described on the page bank account in Cyprus for your company.

Questions people ask

Can Americans open a bank account in Cyprus?

Yes, through a Cyprus company. The bank judges the file, not the passport, and adds a FATCA self-certification to the usual documents. The account opens in 4 to 12 weeks after the company is registered.

Does a Cyprus bank report my account to the US?

A Cyprus bank reports the accounts of US persons to the Tax Department under the FATCA Decree 281/2015. For a company, the report names a US controlling person when the company is a passive non-financial entity.

Which forms does a Cyprus bank ask a US owner to sign?

The bank's own FATCA and CRS self-certification, for you and for the company. Bank of Cyprus says it may use IRS Forms W-8 and W-9, and the Tax Department prescribes no format.

Can I open the company and the bank account at the same time?

You prepare them together and open them in turn. A bank asks for the certificate of incorporation, so the company is registered first. We build the bank file meanwhile and file it when the certificates arrive.

Do I have to travel to Cyprus to open the account?

No. You sign the bank's forms remotely, and a notary or our lawyer certifies the copies. The directive lets the bank's meeting with the beneficial owner be online if it is recorded.
