Process of getting a crypto license in Lithuania

Typically, the licensing process can be summarized in these steps:

  • Step 01

    Establish a Legal Entity

Register a UAB (Private Limited Company) with minimum share capital of €2,500. At least one shareholder and one director required (can be the same person). Submit Articles of Association to the Centre of Registers.

  • Step 02

    Develop AML/KYC Policies

Draft AML/KYC policies covering client identification, transaction monitoring, and suspicious activity reporting — in line with Lithuanian legal standards. These will be reviewed during licensing.

  • Step 03

    Appoint Key Personnel

Assign a qualified AML Officer responsible for compliance monitoring. All directors, shareholders, and the AML Officer must provide proof of identity and a clean criminal record certificate.

  • Step 04

    Prepare and Submit the Application

File the CASP application with the Bank of Lithuania (Lietuvos bankas), the competent authority under MiCA, including: company registration certificate, AML/KYC policies, business plan, proof of share capital and own funds, and personal documents for key personnel.

  • Step 05

    Await Approval

The Bank of Lithuania has up to 25 working days to confirm that the application is complete and up to 40 working days from a complete file to decide, and it may request additional documents. Once authorised, the company can provide the crypto-asset services listed in its licence in Lithuania and, through the MiCA passport, in other EU member states.

Couldn't find the information you need? Send us a message — we'll reply within one business day.
What is a crypto license in Lithuania and who needs it?

Any company offering cryptocurrency exchange or crypto wallet and custody services in Lithuania must hold a CASP authorisation issued by the Bank of Lithuania under the EU MiCA framework. This applies to both local and foreign-owned businesses. The former national registration with the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FCIS) no longer gives the right to provide these services now that the MiCA transitional period has ended.

How long does it take to get a crypto license in Lithuania?

Plan for about 3–6 months in total: 1–4 weeks to register the UAB, time to prepare the application, then the Bank of Lithuania’s review of up to 25 working days for completeness and up to 40 working days for the assessment. Requests for additional information extend the timeline.

What is the cost of a crypto license in Lithuania?

The main costs include UAB registration (€57 state fee), minimum share capital of €2,500, notary fees (€72–€290), the Bank of Lithuania’s application fee and the minimum own funds required by MiCA: €50,000, or €125,000 for exchange and custody services.

Can a non-resident obtain a crypto license in Lithuania?

Yes. Foreign founders can obtain a Lithuanian crypto license with 100% foreign ownership allowed. A local legal address and a qualified AML Officer are required, but directors and shareholders can be non-residents.

What AML/KYC requirements apply for a Lithuanian crypto license?

Crypto license holders in Lithuania must appoint a certified AML Officer, implement AML/KYC policies covering client identification, transaction monitoring, and suspicious activity reporting — fully compliant with EU regulations.

What documents are required to apply for a crypto license in Lithuania?

The Bank of Lithuania requires: UAB registration certificate, AML/KYC policies, business plan detailing crypto activities, proof of share capital and MiCA own funds, and identity plus criminal record certificates for all directors, shareholders, and the AML Officer.
